Testimonials on My Tutoring Services
I’m so glad we found Susan on line. She tutored my daughter for two years and was a huge help with her high school English and writing. My daughter’s skills improved a lot, and she became a much more confident writer. Susan is great to work with—super patient, flexible with scheduling, and she really connected with my daughter.
Highly recommend!—Janet

Ms. Redington has been a blessing to our family. My son, a sophomore in high school has taken a very challenging English Honors class. When I saw his grades going down, I sought out Ms. Redington for help. She helped my son improve on his analysis skills, specifically elaboration and making connections to the content material and the real-world. She was always willing to help and worked with him on many of his writing assignments, book essays, literary analysis, propaganda techniques analysis and scripting for video assignments and in preparing for in class writing tests. Ms. Redington helped him dig deeper and think more about all the nuances and complexities of a topic. He was consistently getting 75% for his assignments before. After receiving tutoring lessons from Ms. Redington he is getting 95% to 100% on his tests and assignments and is the highest scorer in his class. She has extensive knowledge and experience as a college professor. She is great in tutoring for all ages. My middle schooler also received tutoring lessons from her and improved his writing skills. Thank you Ms. Redington!

We recently hired Susan to mentor our nephew who was writing a college entrance essay. As a retired professor, we knew she would be able to help him develop an essay that would stand out amongst other candidates. The end result was a technically proficient piece that still conveyed the depth of his emotions on a difficult topic. He is now studying at LaSalle University

Former Professors As 1-On-1 Private Tutors
Parents have a lot of choices when it comes to finding and hiring a tutor for their daughter or son. A quick search often reveals huge companies with thousands of tutors, the company charging high fees while the tutors may have very little experience, sometimes even being students themselves with tutoring as a side job. In contrast, tutoring IS my job and a personal calling.
I believe that hiring private teachers—especially former professors—is to parents’ advantage. Here are some solid benefits:
THOROUGHLY VETTED: Former professors have already been so thoroughly vetted by the systems of academia that parents can rest assured that they are going to be extremely knowledgeable about their subjects. Faculty are not granted tenure, or emeritus status, without having proven themselves to be great teachers with an excellent grasp of subject matter. I was a tenured Associate Professor, in higher ed for 27 years, awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and Professor Emeritus by my colleagues.
EXPERIENCED IN ONLINE TEACHING: Former professors have likely worked through the pandemic, so they were thrust into online teaching abruptly and had to sink or swim. Those who are seeking work with students 1-on-1 online now are going to be the faculty who didn’t sink, who know how to run a session online because they’ve already taught full classes online. In fact, they are probably thrilled at the prospect of working with just one student at a time online. Working one-on-one is where I thrive! I chose to tutor after retiring from higher ed because I love it so much.
BANG FOR THE BUCK: Former professors are going to give parents and students a HUGE bang for their buck. Many of the companies that come up first in online searches for tutors only require their tutors to have a few years of college in their subject area under their belts in order to be hired, but many don’t even require a college degree in the subject area IF AT ALL. Compare that to hiring someone with 10, 20, 30, or even more years of teaching experience. The thing is, you’re likely to pay the same amount of money regardless of experience level, if not more (ask me about the time I saw tutors still in college charging over double my rates!) I keep my rates affordable and on a sliding scale to help parents through tougher economic times while offering the highest level of expertise possible.
EXCEPTIONAL EFFICIENCY IN DIAGNOSING PROBLEMS: An experienced teacher is far more efficient than an inexperienced teacher, which may lead to fewer sessions needed to get to the point. A teacher who has taught thousands of students is going to be able to zero in on the problems in student work, or the difficulties in grasping subject matter, and be able to head straight for the crux of the issue, which saves time. Saving time means saving money. One session a week with your son or daughter may be all it takes to keep them on track and even improving.
BETTER INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTION: Former professors have likely taken a very active part in course creation, so they are able to draw on those experiences to tailor an individualized approach to teaching each student they meet for private tutoring online. Further, this experience enables them to make adjustments as a student makes progress or brings assignments of different styles to sessions. I will help your student with English homework but also have helped with writing assignments in other classes, like history, physical education, public speaking, and even a bit of French, though I will not claim to be an expert in French!
6. A SUPPORTIVE, CARING, INCLUSIVE APPROACH: Former professors have often worked with thousands of students, which means they’ve met every type of student. From the student who is shy and introverted, to one who has anxiety, to one who needs extra explanation to understand the material, to one who has so many ideas flowing at once that they need some structure, long-term teachers have the ability to “read” students and understand how to support their learning environment in a caring and inclusive way. I aim for my sessions with students to be a safe space for them to express themselves without judgment, and I am a firm believer in a caring approach to help ease students with stress and anxiety.
