English Tutor

High School and College Students

Despite extraordinary efforts made by parents and teachers to continue teaching students during the 2020-2022 academic years via hybrid teaching, many students have been struggling to keep up their skills. Please allow me to help by hiring me as an English tutor for your teen or young adult. I am currently booking students from 9th through 12th grade and will also happily work with college students who need some extra assistance. I can frequently book an appointment within 24 hours!

28 Years of Professional Experience

I’ve got 28 years of professional experience and have been called “a master teacher” by my peers. As the daughter of a former teacher and school principal, I have valued education and the pursuit of knowledge my entire life. I have amassed a tremendous amount of work experience, having taught thousands of young people of all skill levels. My expertise as an English tutor is top-notch because I have seen every type of writing problem there is and have developed strategies to help students fix problems. Can I help your son or daughter? Absolutely.

I graduated with my B.A. in English in 1990 and my M.A. in English in 1993 from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. I was a paid English tutor in college and ran the tutoring program as a grad assistant. I had a job as an adjunct professor for Delaware Technical & Community College before I graduated with my M.A., and I worked for 6 years as an adjunct at local colleges until I earned a tenure-track position as an Instructor of English for Wesley College. I earned tenure in 2007 and spent the majority of my years as an associate professor. At both colleges, my work as an English tutor continued with one-on-one private appointments with students to improve their work. I was honored by my colleagues with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and Professor Emeritus status when I retired. A lifelong learner, I continue to keep my skills up by reading, researching, writing, teaching, and building my business.

What I Do and Why I Do It

There is nothing more rewarding to me than looking into a young person’s eyes and seeing that “click” of recognition, when I find a way to explain a tough concept and the writing skills improve. This is something I can achieve by working as an English tutor via private online sessions. Like many teachers, I was concerned in early pandemic days that teaching online would be too challenging, but I adapted very naturally to the process and it turns out that I love teaching one-on-one online and make every effort to be as personable, interesting, and engaging online as I would be in the classroom. I’m a homebody at heart, an introvert, who feels incredibly comfortable in my own environment, so teaching over great distances via Zoom is a wonderful fit for me, and it turns out that it makes me so much more accessible to students. I am easy to talk to, not intimidating, supportive, intuitive, a great listener, and highly focused on our lesson. I talk with a lot of animation in my face and hands. I do not lecture at the student nor speak in a monotone, but instead, I am energetic and create a flipped classroom in that I aim to draw material from the student by asking questions. I see our work as a partnership and very similar to the way we might interact if face-to-face in the same location. I want us to forget that the computers are there and that we are several states or even a continent away from one another.

I am able to work on many different skills with your son or daughter: basic grammar, essay or paragraph organization, vocabulary, reading comprehension, informative and persuasive writing, speech writing, literary analysis, AP English, and research paper writing. Please keep in mind that your child will be receiving up to and including college level instruction from a former professor at a fraction of the price. It’s a great deal, and you’re not likely to come across it very often, but I’m passionate about working with young people and know that this is part of my calling.

Are you ready to hire me? Here are the details!

I offer the following pricing for tutoring sessions in English: $40/hr. You can book one session, two, three, four, or five sessions below. If you book a fifth session, there is a discount on that session as my way of saying thank you! If you would like to book a tutoring session(s) with me, please use my contact form to let me know of your needs when you book (buy) your session(s), and please email me any materials that I will need to prepare our lesson.

One last note! It is extremely important, and required, that you pre-pay and pre-book your session. I have a lot of different students and I freelance, and I can no longer take verbal (or email) bookings that are not paid in advance because of no-shows, because that has a significant impact on my ability to earn a living. If you would like any of my former or current clients to “vouch” for me that I will absolutely make good on the booking, just let me know! If you want to hop on Zoom quickly to meet me before booking, I can do that too!

Remember to book at least 24 hours in advance of your session. I cannot hold your session time open if I have less than 24 hours notice. Pricing is set to increase in 2024, but if you are a client from 2022-2023, your price per hour will stay the same, and I will arrange to invoice you privately when the price on the website increases.

Important Guidelines for Tutoring:

  1. Tutoring appointments, once booked, are non-refundable. If something comes up and you are able to let me know 24 hours in advance, we can reschedule the appointment. If your son or daughter is a no-show, there is no refund and no rescheduled appointment unless you book another. I will wait 15 minutes for the student to show. If the student does not show in 15 min., I will consider that a no-show.

  2. Please keep in mind that I cannot guarantee what grade(s) your son or daughter will earn on any assignment we work on. I can tell you that typically a student’s grades will improve after we work together, but the amount of improvement is highly individualized. Also, even if we look over rubrics and comments from the teacher and attempt to use that material to improve the student’s skills, we cannot predict exactly how the teacher will grade the next assignment. Some teachers grade tough, and some do not. Some have arbitrary rules, and some do not. We cannot read minds. We can only do our best.

  3. Your son or daughter must meet me halfway: I can teach a lot of skills and give so much feedback and support, and I can explain things various ways, but if a student is distracted or doesn’t put the effort in, that can affect his or her comprehension. Ordinarily, students DO show improvement after working with me, and some show significant improvement, but this is not a given that I can say will definitely happen. If you are concerned about this factor, you may want to book only one session at a time if that makes you more comfortable.
